SHIPBUILDING

Boat Building
Two ships being built side by side at Whyalla, South Australia.

Shipbuilding is an industry of growing importance in Australia. The largest building yard in the Commonwealth is at Whyalla, S.A., and is owned by the Broken Hill Proprietary Co. Ltd., but there are important yards (for both building and repairing) at Sydney, Newcastle and Brisbane, as well as the H.M.A. Naval Dockyard at Williamstown, Vic.

Shipbuilding has been one of Britain's big industries since early times and to-day employs many thousands of workers. The main centres are Clyde, Tyne, Wear, Tees, Belfast, Mersey, Barrow-in-Furness and the Humber.
